In Reply to: They actually hibernate in a fridge??? posted by Chase on February 17, 2002 at 09:33:37:
Fridge hibernation is the most accurate and safest way to hibernate turtles and tortoises(for the varieties that do hibernate). Temps remain steady, and there is no worry about temps going too high or too low. Opening the fridge at least once daily insures oxygen exchange and will not wake up the animal. Hibernation is not really the same thing as sleeping. Body functions are greatly reduced during hibernation and the only way to wake them up is to warm them up.
: Whoa wait a minute... you actually put your tortoise in a refridgerator for months to hibernate? Is there enough oxygen? What happens when you open it up and grab a bite to eat, doesn't that wake him up? Isn't that dangerous?!
