Just thought of this, your yard must be absolutely free of cemical fertilizers and any type of pestisides ie: slug bait, or any other chemicals designed to kill insects, or weeds etc.
Fertilizers and pestisides can kill the tortoise, all of us with outdoor torts have to put up with the bugs and weeds and rather rough looking lawns!!!
Also certain plants are toxic, if the tortoise eats a toxic plant he could be poisoned , become very ill or die.
Tortoises have died after eating daffodils for example, just one in a list of many toxic plants commonly found in yards.
Just thought i'd better add this.
It's really not too complicated, but there are a few things to consider.it's best to get all the info. Then if you do decide to get a tortoise, it will have a safe , happy home.
Did you find out what kind of tortoise you saw in the store? Ask them if it is wild caught or captive bred.
I hope this helps you a bit.
Terry.
