In Reply to: What's the right tortise to get? Please Help! posted by Kristen on June 09, 1999 at 18:24:18:
: I am looking for a tortise that is easy to take care of, great with children with an easy-going temperment, and will live in a 150x50 lot with a 9 ft. by 4 ft. pond. It can be small to medium.{preferably medium in size} Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It all depends where you live, in a humid climate or drier climate. The lot will need to be secure, this means that the fence must be sunk in the ground about a foot, so the tortoise can't dig under and out. The pond must be shallow with sloping edges so a tortoise can't topple in and drown. Also tortoises are more of a look at but don't handle type of pet, constant attention from children can stress them. If you have dogs, they must not be allowed to come into contact with the tortoise. As even the most gentle dogs have been known to attack and seriously injure or even kill tortoises.Heres a link to The Tortoise Trust web site, it has links to other tortoise related sites, caresheets, great articles. Be sure to check out the FAQ at the top of the care sheet page, it answers quite a few questions.
If the tortoise is going to be housed outside year round, you must go with a species that is compatable with your climate . So telling us which State you live in will help us to help you make the right choice.
Hope this helps, please post back letting us know which State you live in, It's great that you are seeking help before making a choice.
Terry.
