You measure SCL or Straight Carapace Length, a good way to do this is to place the tortoise against a wall and make a mark at the furthest extent of the shell them measure to that mark from the wall. If this is a female "normal" redfoot shje is probbly still too small to produce eggs. I have a male standard that I thought was females till he reached 8 inches SCL.
