BBC (London, UK) 14 April 03 Vandals blamed for injured tortoise
An 80-year-old tortoise had to have her cracked shell glued back together after a suspected attack by vandals.
The animal, which was left bleeding from the attack, was also treated with antibiotics by a vet who is monitoring her progress.
RSPCA inspector Ian Burns said the attack in Frome, was one of the most appalling examples of animal cruelty he had seen.
"What animal is more vulnerable than a tortoise? They do not stand a chance of running away."
'Disgusting'
"It is very depressing really that people could do this," he said.
He added that the pet, called Gladdy, had apparently been subjected to "an horrific, deliberate attack".
The owner of the tortoise, Pauline Parr, who had reported her missing to police, said the attack was "sick".
"As you look at her, she is hardly going to attack you, is she?
"She is so helpless. This is disgusting," she added.
Gladdy was taken to vet John Gould after she was found in a neighbouring garden.
