Lisa,
that's how it was for me in Hawaii, not many people that I knew of had torts. This forum was a great source of info for me, and still is. You learn something new everyday.
Hawaii was great for the torts but my husband is military, so living their was only temporary.
Niki posted my photos for me, so you can see how my torts growth is.
The photos aren't really great though.
Bubba has those small bumps in the middle of otherwise smooth new growth.A few of his scutes are actually flat now.
Angel has small bumps in the middle of some of her scutes also, and a ridge in some places where the new growth came in smooth, but the old growth stayed raised.She's a terror and is always trying to sqeeze through or under small places, so her carapace is scratched and banged up a bit also.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be, but if they were really bad when you first got them, it could have played a part in the way they look now maybe.The more pyramided they were at a very early age, the harder it probably is to smooth out, I would think.
