: this is my second posting, is there anybody out there that knows if it is legal ot own a tortoise in NJ,
: thanks
: yes you can own turtles and tortoises in nj. i have had turtles and torttoises for years now. i send the nj div. nongames, and wildlife my application with proof of purchase every year. but what you cannot do is buy or sell them here in the state. also, the state has a list of turtles that cannot be owned under a hobbyist permits. obviously this pertains to sea turtles, and other turtle which is endangered or threatened. ei. spotted, wood, bog turtles. all of my guys come from staten island, ny. keep those reciepts as proof of purchase. it only costs 10/year for a hobbyist permit. nj laws seem strict, but in all fairness, with my collection, they have never given me any troubles. i know the laws, and they know what is here in my home.
