If you are using a waterfall, watch the slope. When I first got the pond setup it was losing water and I had the toughest time figuring out where it was leaking. I isolated the problem to the waterfall by running the filter into a bucket and monitoring the level of the bucket, no water loss. I left the pond full without the filter in the mix, no water loss. This made me realize it had to be the waterfall. I took the waterfall down and checked it closely for holes, filled it and checked for water loss, nothing. Finally I made the slope more gradual and put all the pieces back together. No more water loss. That took about 2 weeks to determine, but at least I didn't have to dig up the pond. Hope this saves you as much time as it could've saved me.
