using taxpayer money to promote christianity (which "God" is the main feature of) IS promoting religion, and by promoting ONE religion, is PROHIBITING other religions or non-religious beliefs. Being forced to repeat it daily as a child is in fact establishing religion in a child, a child whose family may or may not share the belief.
The only people upset by this ruling are Christians, who have grown used to their ability to stomp on the rights of the minority, and have enjoyed their priviledged status. They are also angry that they may lose an outlet for force feeding their beliefs to others.
People secure in their beliefs, and not so arrogant as to assume theirs are the only way of thinking have no problem at all with correcting past abuses by government.
And things do get corrected over time. Remember, slavery was legal once, and was fixxed. The same happened with women and the right to vote.
and I don't think the thunder of angry christians would feel the same if the pledge originally said:
"one nation, there is no god, indivisible, with..."
and they were removing "there is no god" to bring the pledge into constitutional use, or not allowing it's forced recitation by children and government employees.
