i have an outdoor pen with a pair of hermanns tortoises, and for the past few weeks the male has been constantly at the female. often when i go out on the backporch i can see plants moving, hear him pounding her, or hear him squeaking. i believe the female is getting stressed by these attentions, and both of them seem to have a decreased appetite. today i put a temporary division in the pen to keep him away from her. this evening i actually saw the female out and about(makes me think maybe she has to lay more eggs but the male was stressing her out too much for her to venture out and find a spot). the male when i checked on him was trying to dig under the wall to get back to her. he gave up on that, and then literally started racing up and down the wall(much faster than normal walking). hopefully he will settle down and start to eat more. just thought that was kinda funny, seeing the female leisurely strolling about and him being frantic at getting back to her. ;-)
