like DC sayed, hiding spot are very important. they provide security, comfort and relieve stress. taking away his hiding spot will do more damage then buying an expensive light bulb. besides your UV heat lamp insn't going to provide UV for your tort when he is on the other side of the cage. he gains the benifits of the UV heat lamp when he is under it. provide them with what they need and let them choose when where and how, yes they are smart enough to decide on there own what they do need, its up to you as the keeper to provide it for them when they do decide to use it. it might be possable to set up your UV heat bulb to come on when your tort does go underneath it, but the ideal set up to keep your tort healthy is to have a regular heat lamp(to provide heat) and have a UV heat lamp setting beside the regular bulb. If you can find a way you could have your heat lamp turned on until your tort moves underneath the heat lamp and then your UV heat lamp turns on and your regular buld turns off. then have your UV heat turn off when he moves and have your regular heat lamp turn on. that way you provide the heat and the UV and still keep your hide spots. or something simplar is to have timers set on your heat lamps for the UV bulb to come on and the regular bulb to go off when he is most likely to bask underneath it.
