How SAD! I grew up in Florida and one summer this very cute gopher tortoise about 8" long moved in under the shed in the back yard. We called animal control to find out how to provide for it (oh, the days before the internet!) and they told us we could be FINED for keeping it, so did we really want to proceed with the call? Mine you, the little darling moved in with US and was never kept by a gate. It breaks my heart that the law doesn't mandate an inspection prior to industial dozing, it doesn't seem to me that big of a inconvienience. "Spunky" was the highlight of my childhood and would actually come and sun with me if I was out laying in the backyard by the pool. I can't imagine saying to my children "i remember when....." :(
