When I heard about the decision my first reaction was outrage that the more liberal elements of this country are being able to spread their propaganda. My second reaction was one of disbelieve because the words under God do not in any way violate the Constitution.
Religion is only mentioned once, in the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights. It reads as such:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The words under God do not violate this. It is not an attempt by Congress to establish religion. Hearing the words under God does not in anyway impede the free exercise of religion. It also does not impede on freedom of speech or any other rights in the Bill of Rights.
The phrase separation of church and state is in no way mentioned in the Constitution. It is a quote from a speech by Thomas Jefferson, and is in no way binding.
