In america most rule is done by majority voice, but that is tempered by the "rights" of each person, wether minority or not. For instance, we cannot have a majority decide that women cannot vote any longer, as that would infringe upon their rights. Likewise our elected leaders cannot make decisions, and no amount of votes should allow the constitution to be ignored, as Eisenhower did in 1954 when he altered the pledge from a constitutionally compliant one to push his own religion onto others.
I'm just amazed it's taken this long to get it started towards fixing. On the news so far I've heard people bringing up:
in god we trust on money
prayer before congress convenes
god bless america type statement before supreme court convenes
etc..
as justification for forcing religious speech on others. Unfortunately, these are all violations of the constitution as well, we just haven't gotten to them yet, much like the realization that not allowing blacks to vote was a violation, but it took years to fix it.
