Hello all,
Please, PLEASE keep the PetCo reports coming in!!!!!
This is very, VERY important if we are going to have any chance at getting this to stop.
I am not at all surprised you have an animal so ill. At least you were one that got it to a vet.
Please send reports of animals purchased, what you have seen in stores, etc. to
mailto: torotiseaid@envirolink.org
I previously posted a questionnaire here, can do so again, makes it a lot easier to let us know some of the things we do need to know...
Thanks,
Annie Lancaster

I bought a leopard from Petco and took it to our vet for a preliminary check up. Our doctor said it was a walking time bomb! It tested positive for hookworms (very serious he said), Proteus bacteria (untreatable if abcesses have formed inside the tortoise), and something else called coccidia (will require many injections of drugs with no guarantee of a cure)basically sealing this animal's doom.
: I picked out the healthiest one there! Our vet, after I told him this, said ALL of those animals will die a premature death! I am very concerned about this. A company like Petco (where the pets go!) should have the decency to only sell captive bred tortoises. All tortoises are listed as threatened or worse(CITES convention)and don't deserve being done to death by a multi million dollar company.
: I am considering having Petco pay my vet bills for this inferior mechandise! Everyone else should do the same!
: Don't know how many hundred stores Petco has, but simple math shows that these people are handling large numbers of leopard tortoises.STOP IT!! Non threatened species from the wild, while distasteful, are one thing but these tortoises should be captive bred leaving the wild population out of the picture. Don't believe the Africans when they say they are captive breeding these animals!! Not true !
