One problem is breeders, keepers, and dealers have been using common names and creating names for color phases to sell herps. There doesn't seem to be any "scientific" regulatory agency anymore that decides on species, sub-species, variants, etc.
Consequently, anyone can basically advertise based upon their own preferences. This is not to disagree with anyone, but just to demonstrate that there is no controlling "body."
The other issue is value. Any tortoise can be advertised at any price, what decides it value is who will pay this price for the animal. It is like the million dollar albino monitor - is anyone going to realisitcally pay a million dollars? I think not. But, it makes for a great ad!
What I truly believe is needed are more individuals in the scientific community who can regulate naming species, etc. However, with all the color morphs being bred (basically for commercial purposes), scientists are usually not interested in dealing with such topics. And would usually prefer to stick with other forms of research.
Just an opiniion for what its worth.
