The question was raised on the Tortoise Trust list. I posted a similar message onthe other list and would also like to here comments from this group. I find it very disturbing to hear Leopards are allergic to baytril. Two weeks ago I tried rescuing a 4" leopard from Petco. After 3 days of little movement and eyes shut except when soaking, no other symptoms were exhibited such as discharge from the nose, sunken eyes or a soft shell. Reflexes also seemed OK. I decided to take it to a Vet. I found a Vet. on the ARAV list who operates close to my house. I took the tortoise that day to see her. The Vet diagnosed the tortoise as having a respiratory infection or even pneumonia. The Vet recommended daily .04cc shots of baytril. I specifically asked if the Leopards are allergic the baytril. The vet assured it was safe and that I was thinking of a deworming drug whose name I don't remember. Upon leaving the Vet also gave me care sheet for desert tortoises explaining much of the same applies to Leopards. The next morning the tortoise was dead. I Vet explained to my wife that the animal was very sick and probably died form the stress of the exam.
Was the baytril a bad idea? Was this Vet negligent?
Thanks
Jeff
