pine in its original form has been toxic to birds as will as cedar. I believe thats from the sap that formed on the trees, since "milled" board pine is fine to use for birds to chew on. Pine mulch being the outer bark of the tree does come into contact with the sap before being "milled" for commercial use, that why i was wondering. It might be toxic though as cat stated if they do eat it. i was looking for cypress the other day and came across the pine bark which doesn't appear to be as splintery as the cypress.
