in some cases they are useful. They make it easier to provide a microhabitat if you do not live in an area similar to that of the species native habitat such as the NE, NW US or the UK. You can get Vision cages up to the equivelent size of a 600. While an outdoor enclosure or a turtle table is usually the way to go it is not always possible for the species kept. If an enclosed enclosure is used there is one caution in that it is recomended that a small circulating fan such as a computer fan be installed to avoid stagnent air situation.
