Well first of all a 40g is not big enough for any adult/baby tortoise. Most of the tortoises that stay small are very active. I have two russians that live in a 14ft X 8ft enclosure each and they both use up each of their enclosures. It is 110F here and they are still active and roam around their enclosure all day. You would need at least a 4ft X 4ft enclosure for one or maybe two of the Russians. Hope this helps.
ps if you do get a russian, be prepared because they eat a whole lot!
: I知 wondering what the recommended first Tortoises are? Here is what I知 looking for in a tortoise; maybe someone can tell me if such a thing exists. First and for most I would like something that stays small. Some thing that I could keep in a 40g and it would be comfortable. I would like some thing that is hardy and some thing that I can feed produce to that I can prepare for a week at a time and keep in the fridge. A friend of mine has two Russians. I don稚 know much about them but the size seems to be dead on for what I知 looking for. So does such a tortoise exist, or am I dreaming in colour.
: Thanks,
: Trevor
