Whoever decided that there is a 'prefered rate of growth' probably does not know much about tortoises. There is no such thing as 'too fast' or 'too slow'. The rate is determined but the availabile nutrients and the environmental conditions. It happens in the wild. When there is a 'bumper year' for growth in a particular area you will see large growth rings in a turtle/tortoise and when the reverse is true you will see narrow growth rings. If there was a predetermined rate the animals would grow at a set rate on their own. I don't know where this idea started but rate is just one more thing that you don't have to worry about. If environmental conditions are such that a balance of available nutrients are utilized there should be no problem.
