TIMES & TRANSCRIPT (Moncton, New Brunswick) 18 June 02 Four stolen tortoises still missing
Four rare tortoises stolen last week from the Magnetic Hill Zoo have captured the hearts of animal lovers everywhere.
Zookeeper Bruce Dougan said yesterday he has received e-mails from reptile collectors in the province who have posted information on the missing tortoises on their personal Web sites.
As well, he said, staff at the Canadian Wildlife Service have details on the reptiles and are "keeping their feelers out," and there have been dozens of inquires from the public worried about the whereabouts of the tortoises.
"We have gotten tons of calls and everyone visiting the zoo asks about them," Dougan said.
The police have no further leads on the tortoise thieves, but they believe the person or people responsible for their disappearance entered the zoo on the quiet June 8 evening and paid regular admission with the sole purpose of stealing the rare reptiles, which could net up to $3,000 a piece.
"I'd bet money they are in the hands of a reptile collector right now, possibly outside the country," Dougan said.
The two yellow-footed tortoises, native to South America, and two African leopard tortoises were stolen from the zoo's ecodome.
