In Reply to: Newbie question: What regular vet checks do tortoises need? posted by Harry on June 09, 2002 at 03:35:38:
I take my Sulcata to my vet a few times a year,
for routine exams, mostly so my Vet knows what
is normal for my tortoise, and is accustomed to
him in his healthy state. Usually vets get
animals brought to them that are in terrible
shape for the first time and an angry owner wondering
why they can't "save it". The time to find a
good veterinarian and have them know you and your
animals is BEFORE you have an emergency and NEED
one! If nothing I bring him in to use their
digital floor scale (He's over 20 pounds), plus
gets the ooohhs and aaahhhs from the receptionists
and other patrons. Also he's not traumatized as
he's been there before.
2 Times I've had an emergency, involving Teddy,
and I was glad to know that they knew who I was
and who Teddy was on the phone already...
a.) once a few years ago he must have gotten
into something bad by the neighbors fence (at my
old house), and began vomiting (yeah, that was
very weird) several times, I rushed him to
the vet who kept him all day, giving him fluids
under his skin and saved his life I believe.
We made her a nice Thank You card (my son made it).
b.) a second time I think I accidentally washed
some dirt into his eye (rinse off shell before
washing head!) and he wouldn't stop rubbing it
with his forearm, I took him in and she washed it
out and checked for damage, luckily there wasn't
any.
Just my experience. Good luck!
