While you should be cautious about the plants you select you don't have to be paranoid. If the tortoise is well fed it might sample the plant but it will usuall not eat what is bad for it. Tortoises can even safely consume some plants that are known to be poisonous to mammals. Mushrooms (although not a plant) is a good example of this. This is one food item that redfoots seem to like. I would not intentionally feed them mushrooms that I found unless I knew what kind it was. On the other hand if I caught mine foraging on mushrooms that have come up in the enclosure, I wouldn't panic. There's a great deal of grey area here. Bottom line, if it is safe for mammals, it's safe for tortoises although the opposite is not so.
