: I realized today at the grocery store as I spent about
: 45 minutes scouring for greens and the right veggies for
: my torts, turts, and iguana, then 5 minutes quickly
: grabbing some "ready to eat" and o so tasteless foods
: for myself that they eat better than I do. Of course
: I then went home and prepped the veggies and greens into
: various salads and mixes and baggies and such....
: much more time than I spend all week prepping my own
: food... I've started to drool at the sound of the microwave
: ding...
: *snicker*
: WHAT IS Arugala? It looks like a tastey green...
: I could only find chickory, endive, red swiss chard, and
: watercress. *growl* I'll try some other stores when
: the salad of these 4 runs out. I'd like to avoid lettuce.
: Next week I'll work on getting some planters going for
: clover and some weed greens on the porch, and the yard
: will have some nice growth in a month or so (I'm gonna
: make a big 4x4 wooden square of 2x8's with no floor,
: so I can sit out with them (I can't leave them out) and
: let them graze without wandering.
: Till then though, I suppose I'll have to keep searching
: for the wacky stuff and accepting those wierd looks as
: I buy 30-50 cents worth of 12 different produce selections.
: *grin* I had to tell the checkout lady what half of them
: were on this trip.
: Anyway,
: Have a nice day!

Hi Nathan, I wouldn't feed the Swiss chard to your torts. It contains oxalic acid which interferes with the torts ability to absorb calcium.Instead of the chard try romaine lettuce, which can be used as a base for the diet, as can the chichory , endive, watercress. Clovers, grasses and dandelions are very good for the torts, as are hibiscus flowers and the pads of the opuntia cactus ( spines removed).
Swiss chard, spinach are not recomended. At Darrell Sennekes Hatchling haven there is an article explaining all this. I will try and link it later, i'm late taking my daughter to school
I'm glad you're enjoying your torts so much!
Terry..
