they are a hardy tortoise, so temperatures this time a year shouldn't be too worrisome. I think placing them into a cloth bag, then into a container such as a plastic butter dish or cool whip tub, with plenty of holes in it, packed around with crumpled newspaper, then into a sturdy box, tape the container into the box and pad it with newspaper as well. It may seem elaborate, but all the newspaper will help keep it dry, as will the container, and they add buffer zones for shaking. I've gotten animals this way succesfully.
