it's a misconception that "desert" means endless
sand dunes only, it's that way in some deserts
of course, but mostly these deserts are rocks,
dry looking bushes, rocks, hard dirt, (did I
mention ROCKS!), and not loose sand that is the
consistancy of sugar like we buy in bags here.
Even mixed with soil, you're making way too small
of a variety of substrates, forcing them to be
on sand which apart from the impaction problem,
is abrasive as heck to skin and shell alike.
It's also a hazard to eyes. Skip the sand.
