In Reply to: Is sand impaction a problem in the wild?? posted by Frank on June 05, 2002 at 22:16:04:
Frank
I have 5 egyptians and just started to keep them on indoor outdoor carpet. I have tried rabbit rabbit pellets and didn't like them. I had my oancake tortoises on sand. When I changed them to rabbit pellets they continued to defecate sand for TWO months after I had changed their substrate. I know people who use sand and it's fine, it scares me though that there was that much sand in their stomachs! As far as what happens in the wild, I would think they are eating leaves and plants that are mostly elevated slightly off the ground. I'm sure they get some but I imagine because they might have to reach up with their head for those types of foods, that they would get less sand that way. I fed my pancakes on a piece of flag stone and they still ended up with sand in them because they would move the food around the pen and get sand on it and move it onto the sand.
Just some thoughts.
If you want to contact me privately regarding Egyptians, please do. I am a beginner at them but know some experts I can refer you to for things I don't know.
Thanks
Toby
