also, shallow covered dishes of citrus oil work okay, attracting ants, sticking and disolving them.

diatomacious earth works well, and is safe for all but insects, it's like a powder, and when it gets on them and they try to clean it off, it shreds their inards (very sharp but so tiny no effect on anything bigger than ants).

and of course the poisons and boiling water as mentioned previously. I avoid poisons (though there may be some that are safe for tortoises, i don't know). I would first use boiling water repeatedly, digging into the pile and using it repeatedly, then other ideas, as long as you arei nside the pen. Outside the pen you can be more liberal.
