Well, you should be soaking the tortoise 2 times per week or so...in warm water. Also, UVB lighting is needed, in addition to heat lamp, if outdoor time isn't being provided (due to temps, etc.). Also, I would recommend discontinuing the tortoise chow right away. Only one commercial food I'm aware of that has an acceptable level of protein is Pretty Pets Tortoise Food. Even that should be fed once in a while. Your tortoise should be getting fresh dark greens, grasses, clovers. Sand can cause impaction if it's being eaten. Also, if it's silica sand and not washed playground sand it could be fatal. A good substrate is a 50/50 mixture of washed playground sand and sterile organic soil (no perlite, or chemicals added, or fertilizer). : : I hear that these torts are big eaters. I have a 4 inch one and i was told that it likes to eat this tortoise chow. Which it does. The person told me to give it six of these things a day plus its veggies and other stuff. It only eats about a half of stick of chow. Thats not a heavy feeder to me. Whats wrong. I have it in a large indoor pen with sand as substarte and a heat lamp. It has a hiding space and all. Tempature never gets below 70 at night

: Do you have water available? I have 9 sulcatas and they all eat tons of food. I mainly feed them grass (when they are outside), greens, and some bulk veggies. I also give them warm soaks about once a week. I also keep mine on rabbit pellets, I have heard bad things about plain sand.
