UVB and vit. D3

Ok, I know that turtles must have vitamin D3 to process calcium properly..but what is the point in UVB lighting? Does UVB lighting get turned into vitamin D3 or something? Can someone explain the UVB-calcium-Vitamin D3 thing to me better? I even read the reptiles magazine MBD article and i didnt quite get it...
