you don't want him running around the perimeter
endlessly (it's discouraging too, makes you
feel like he hates it in there or something).
Anyways, plant some things in the center and on
the edges, place some flat stones, give him things
to walk around, and points of interest in the
center also.

Same thing indoors, I used to put things on
the glass which is the front of his indoor tank
to keep him from "pacing" it, he'd have to walk
around those, and it broke the cage up into
sections.
Make sure everything is safe and not capable of
entrapping him too.
Things to put in there are like stones, flat
rock, plants, pieces of wood (branches),
his hide/house, water bowls, toy turtles etc...!
