I am considerring a pen just for a smaller species, such as the russians. I doubt I would let even a healthy verified tort live loose in the yard with the turtles, though, with the pond as deep as it will be (3'). It would depend on how the rest of the yard was running. I think a sulcata might satisfy the tortoise bug, though! All the turtles besides babies will be hibernating in the winter, so I think a tortoise that won't might be nice to have, as the only "awake" guy in winter besides newborns.
