Hey,
Try a Russian Tortoise... they don't get very big and they're very curious and friendly. Also, in my opinion, they're the cutest of all the species. I have Sampson in a 55 gallon Rubbermaid (which isn't the best thing to keep him in, but definitely not the worst) container with cypress mulch as the substrate, a heat lamp on one side, and a Reptisun 5.0 UV bulb. While I'm home, I let him roam around the apartment, so he's not in his "home" very often, save for when I'm at work, in class, or just out and about. He eats like a pig, so I like him to get excercise. I want him to be good to go for hibernation this winter. This is a great tortoise to have, I've learned so much. I used to keep snakes, so it was easy to accomodate for him. :)
