The 50/50 mix is a safe substrate. Some people use plain indoor/outdoor carpet, dirt, oyster shell, silica sand, or play sand and are successful with these. I suggest playing around and seeing what your guys prefer. See which one they are most active and natural acting on.
Loam would be potting soil or compost without additives.
All the people that I know in Fla. that have these say they have the best luck with them when they are kept indoors. That's not a given. Again, experiment, try and set up a dry environment outdoors. That is, use a dry well drained substrate and see what happens.
