It sounds more like a spotted turtle, green shell and lack of hinge rule out box turtle.And I don't know of any tortoises with a green shell.
But here's a box turtle web site,so see if it looks like a box turtle anyway, although if it doesn't have a hinge , I doubt it.

Does it have webbed feet?
And are the back legs, lizard like ,if so it's a turtle.

Or are the back legs and feet stumpy like elephants feet, if so tortoise.

Is there any water near the area you found it?
Spotted turtles need water.
I would post at the turtle forum for more info. Also, scroll down and take a look at the posts at the turtle forum.
You'll find quite a few spotted turtle posts, with photos.
