Hi there,
I have greek tortoises from Spain, Greece, and North Africa. They look different and they need different cares.
The ones from Spain and Greece do need to hibernate and do very well even during very cold winter.
The ones from north Africa do hibernate too. It can get very cold in north Africa and Lebanon too!
The only difference between Europe and North Africa is the the winter lasts for less. This means that you cannot leave the tortoise to hibernate by her self. You have to keep under control her during this period. I put mine inside a box and bring it in a cold room inside my house. I don't allow them to hibernate longer then 2 monthes. And they do well. They hate humidity. This is the factor that can kill 'em. They can withstand even cold weather but will eventually die for humidity!
Ciao,
Sam.
