Hello Josh,
I think you're on the right track finding out about the animals before making a spontaneous buy. I keep leopard tortoises, and they can not stand being indoors in the winter. Most of the larger species need a large outdoor area to graze on for hours a day. The grasses and various weeds in the yard give them the high fiber diet they need that canot be easily replicated unless you go cut your lawn daily and throw it on the floor in the tort's room.
I don't know anything about Russians, but most animals that get over a foot in length are going to need access to a yard. I hope this helps, and you & the pet you choose are happy.
