: : Cliff,
: : what experience, please fill us in on the details.
: : Teddy is still small, easy to pick up, and will still fit in a carrier.
: : These trips might get harder when he weighs over 60lbs/100lbs or more and you have to remove the top of the carrier to get him in. Because he can't fit through the carrier door!
: : Niki is pretty lucky she can take Teddy to Grandmas, and let him graze her lawn down a bit.
: : Also, Teddy isn't housed outdoors year round.I belive that even in the warmer months, he goes in the house at night. So he doesn't yet have his burrow, his territory so to speak.
: : He's used to being moved about, in and out of the house and so forth.
: : I can see your point of view though.
: : For example, if I had say a pair of Russian torts housed outdoors. Torts that had made their enclosure their home, dug their holes/burrows etc. Torts that saw their enclosure as their whole world.
: : I wouldn't want to disturb them by taking them out of that well known environment and confuse them by moving them.
I would have gotten it all in the same post. Terry's point about established tortoises outside makes all the difference. It is clear that Ted is a member of the family and is enjoyed up close and personal. If he were stand-offish or disliked the attention, Niki would surely have picked up on it and adjusted to make Teddy feel comfortable. I have no doubt that Ted's personality and behavior determine the way Niki handles him. Almost everyone posts that sulcata are sociable. Why not make the most of it? If someone has a lot of tortoises I can see why tooling around town with one of them may not hold much interest. That doesn't make the person wrong, just different.
