I always recomend that you get your tortoise used to having its head handled. Whenever I get a new tortoise I stroke its head and neck and try and get it use to me opening its mouth. This allows me to monitor tongue color and check if the glottis is clear. It also allows me to easily administer meds if I have to.
I just had a situation to where I had to medicate a ten kilo leopard daily. I prefer tablets for various reasons. I also had to get a blood workup of the same tortoise. The vet was totally blown away at how easy it was to draw blood from this animal.
On another note for those of you who have large tortoises. If you have to pick them up try and keep them horizontal and upright. There's basicly nothing holding their guts in place and there are cases reported to where the intestines can get twisted and cause a life threatening blockage that can only be corrected by surgery if at all.
