regarding Sulcatas...

Hi, I'm still reeling from Terry's post trying to absorb it!
I think the pic. of Rose - the big Sulcata should be posted
more often, and it's unfortunate that people get hatchlings
or for crying out loud - 2 hatchlings and haven't a clue what's
going on, or even worse - think they can just "forget about it"
until they need to - are these people thinking or even hoping
that the tortoises will just die before they have to deal with
it due to neglect or something - the way most people that
bought Iguanas seemed to think. What Esther said is true -
though I don't find mine destructive at all, he's never messed
up anything in the house - except once he climbed up onto the
fireplace and started displacing the ceramic/wood decorative
turtles there, probably looking to make sure they were fake! lol!
We added an addition to our house when it was built initially
(extra $6500 for space for his current and future indoor enclosures),
and the other things he's gotten as he needed them have also
cost money - lately spent over $500 on his outdoor pen, stuff
like that. My husband does everything that I can think that
Teddy needs (digging in a LONG drainage line/pipe so the pen wouldn't
fill with water including a drainage bucket filled with rocks
etc...quite a physical chore, he could have been watching TV
I suppose I'm lucky!) Both my husband and son can take care
of Teddy if I'm busy (my mom and dad can as well as my brother)
they all live in town - Teddy goes over there every Friday
and more often sometimes to visit.
I refuse to take a full-time job working for the city Fire Dept.Inspections
and instead work part time at a school teaching so I'm home
by lunch to "take care of Teddy", and remain paid only part time
for all fire calls I go on. This also gives me a lot of vacation
time - 3 months summer completely off, stuff like that.
So the time factor I think I've covered, and the financial
factor isn't a problem.
Our house has 3 return air vents and 2 seperate climate controls,
voila - no smell though he usually goes in the morning before
I leave so I can clean it up unless I have to go early somewhere
or something unusual comes up. He has walked around the house
without incident so far, and at my old house and other people's
house. He doesn't "void" on people like many reptiles do when
picked up, never has tried that.
Maybe I'm just lucky with him (seems that way from what I read
sometimes) actually I never expected any problems with him,
my only misinformation before buying him was that the max
weight was about 80-100 pounds, though for a male it's possibly
higher I know now.

I don't know what to tell people other than I like mine a lot,
he's great, watching him and my son play (really!) with the
water hose/sprinkler today was great, amused them both all
afternoon! :) Teddy seems very small to me still (I suppose that's
good) and other than pushing the trashcan around in the kitchen,
he likes to do that cause he gets attention for being so "strong",
ohh ahhh lol, he does not damaged anything.

That's all I can think of. Niki & Teddy
