Hi Thomas~

Our Sulcata, Suki, does this all the time. There's nothing wrong with him - we had him checked also. We finally decided he's showing his "manhood", like a big bad guy. Who knows the real reason.

We just got a Greek yesterday, Butterball, so we haven't seen any of this type of behavior yet.

Hope this helps somewhat!

Peace,
~ChristineF

: Phallus Problem -- End of Our Rope

: Our Greek tortoise (testudo graeca graeca) has been letting his phallus out every time he urinates and just about every time he defecates. This has been going on for six months and he is only approximately two years old.

: It seems as if he is having increasing trouble putting his phallus back in after he has urinated. Though, he always gets it in within a few minutes or so.

: He has been to our veterinarian (who is herp certified) two times (he is going again this Friday). We are also in constant contact with our vet. He, in turn, has been in contact with a colleague in Chicago who is a herpetology/aviary specialist.

: We can not associate any dietary/environmental changes with his phallus problems.

: In addition to our vet visits, we have taken the following steps:
: (a)he has had an x-ray (which showed nothing);
: (b)he has had a bacterial culture (which showed nothing);
: (c)he has been treated for protozoa (flagellates) infection with a deworming medicine (with which our vet has had success in dealing with flagellates and, in fact, the levels did dramatically decrease); the level of protozoa was not extremely large to begin with and his most recent stool sample showed that he was fine.

: On the positive side, he is extremely active (he gets ?walked? every day) and his appetite has always been extremely good (though it has seemingly increased in the last month or so). He growth is good and he is alert. Other than the phallus problem he appears to be in very good health.

: He has been urinating and defecating regularly (approximately every day). Though we have noticed that after the latest round of dewormer (in January) he has had occasional diarrhea and anal leakage.

: Thus, to make a long story short, we are at the end of our rope. We don?t know what could be causing this to continue. Has anyone else had this experience? What should we do?

: Thanks a lot for your help. My wife and I, and especially Titus himself, look forward to any suggestions or comments. We apologize for the long message.

: Thomas Ambrosio
