I remember loving road trips because there was always a chance of rescuing a turtle. When I was a little girl, our family always kept a box in the car in case we found a box turtle on the road and had to "save it." We would take the turtle to the local nature preserve park and let it go free.
Northern Virginia is now so overdeveloped, I don't know where any of the old woods are that used to house wild boxes. It breaks my heart to see them all over the road, happily coming out to find their mate or lay some eggs and then a housing project goes up, and a car comes along and..... very sad.
It will eventually spell the end of Boxes in the wild.
