First of all, CB egyptian tortoises are going to be easier to find. That's a plus when looking for a pet but a minus for the demand of Russian tortoises. So, if your goal is to breed them in 10 years or so, it may be a more profitable (in the long run) idea to start breeding russians. In 10 years, there probably won't be many, if any at all, russians left to be imported.
I have no experience with the egyptians, only Leopards and now a Russian, which was imported and in pet shop conditions. It had to be taken to a vet and treated for various parasites, and a resp. infection, as well as a major diet change.
My russian tortoise, even though imported, is a very sociable animal, which is another plus for looking for a pet. She eats food right out of my hand and is getting more sociable the more I am around her.
Russians are herbivourious. So, if you don't like feeding live/dead animals to things, they're the way to go. I'm not sure if egyptians are.
One of the bad things about russians is that there is no such thing as a perfect diet for them in captivity.
: Thanks to all who responed to my previous post. I have narrowed my search to the two above species and wondered what the pro's & con's of each were (i.e. difficulty in maintaining)? Also, are there breeders on this forum that have hatchlings or yearlings for sale?
: Thanks.
