Curt and Kelly, for sulcata think grazing herbivore.
No fruits, eggs, dairy, meat or animal protein of any kind.
No veggies such as peas, corn, beans etc.......
These tortoises are grazers, in the wild there is only graze (grasses, vetches etc) and leaves and flowers.
So think natural when feeding them, daily grazing on grasses, clovers, vetches, edible leaves, flowers......
This isn't always possible year round in some climates in captivity. So the next best thing is feeding a diet of leafy greens, such as Endive, Romaine, Turnip Greens, Collards etc......
But even the leafy greens shouldn't be fed exclusively,as that can also cause loose stools and digestive problems. Many foods recommended for sulcata can be grown in your yard.
Mulberry leaves, fig leaves, dandelion, hibiscus flowers and leaves, a grazing area, edible wildfowers, opuntia catus.......
Fiber is one of the most important ingredients in a sulcatas diet, and feeding the foods above (or adding as many as possible to the greens) will ensure that your sulcata is getting the needed fiber.
Fruits are too surgery and can quickly cause intestinal problems, loose stools and even colic.
Feeding animal protein to these plant eaters can cause liver and kidney disorders, and contribute to rapid growth. Resulting in distorted scutes (pyramiding)and other health problems.
Foods high in fat can cause liver problems and even jaundice.
A grazing/browse diet is probably the best diet we can provide captive sulcata. In the winter when it's too cold maybe for the sulcata to go outdoors, a leafy green diet can be fed.
But still try to supplement it with hay, grasses, and edible flowers etc.
Hope this helps.
Terry.
