If you want a really easy way to make a decent cage, see if you can find a sturdy old table, especially a lab or classroom table. Places i can think of to check are flea markets, garage sales, and surplus sales of big corporations or Universities (this is a great source of cheap stuff). Then screw in walls of plywood or another opaque material on the back and 2 sides, and a wall of plexiglass on the front. viola, inexpensive turtle home that you can have closer to eye level. (convenient to sit in a nice recliner and watch tortoise lumber about). Added benefit being the ability to affix a heating strip underneath (then put foil or a baking pan under it to reflect heat up) to make a warm end (though you could use ceramic bulb elements from above, which is probably easier).
Save your tank for a nice aquarium or terrarium!
