: I run a reptile rescue/adoption in the Richmond, Virginia area and received an email last evening asking if I had room for two Florida Gopher Tortoises. The sender told me they had been kept as pets and he/she didn't want to release them. My question is what is the law in Virginia on this species? I am currently trying to track it down and would appreciate any input from the forum. I do not know where these animals are coming from at this time. The sender could be anywhere in the US. All I have so far is an email address. Thanks.

Why don't you send them to Florida where they can be released into their natural habitat? Depending on which species it is the laws are different. If you have a license to rehabilitate endangered species then you should be able to receive them. If not, I would suggest that you find someone who does and have them sent there to avoid any troubles.
