Sexing is a piece of cake. Females have short tails, males have proportionally much, much longer tails with a horny scale at the end that is much more developed than in females. If you have a male and a female, it is easy to tell the difference. If not, I would say that any tail over 2" long belongs to a male. Russians only spend a couple of months above the ground in their native lands. The rest of the time, they are either aestivating (during the summer) or hibernating. It has been said that these resilent tortoises have a substance in their blood that acts to prevent it from freezing, and thus can stand severe temps. I hibernate my Russians at between 40-47f degrees. Though some would disagree, I think it ought to be done each year, if done properly. And if you plan on breeding them, you probably ought to at least cool them for some time. That's a bit more than 2 cents worth.
