Ian,
Two things to watch:
The temperature where they are hibernating must stay within the proper range - too low and the obvious problem with freezing, too high for too long and they may exhaust their energy reserves or possibly have immunity problems. Maybe you could place a thermometer probe near them for your peace of mind.
Also make sure that they are safe from gnawing rodents or other animals that might dig down to them.
I purchased some hermanns hatchlings from a man who always hibernated his stock outdoors. He said he had one old female that had been in the US for forty years and had never been indoors - I believe he is in USDA zone 5.
