Wu, I'm sure you did not intend to keep your tortoise upside-down, however, if the tortoise manages to flip itself on it's back and you do not notice this in a relatively short amount of time, what usually happens is that the lungs fill up with fluids and the tortoise dies that way. I'm sorry if that was not a really medical or technical statement, but I can only assume that's why the tortoise died. As far as it being bloated, this could be a post-mortem phenomenon...whereby the gasses in the body will cause the skin and organs to distend and eventually putrefy. I assume the cause of death was because it was flipped over. How much time passed since you saw the tortoise upright up until you found it dead? Also, if the enclosure had a bunch of items or cage furniture in it which would allow the tortoise to climb on it and possibly flip, you might want to avoid this in the future by keeping the cage empty of everything besides a flexible hide box (I use tented newspaper) and a food dish/water dish which should be relatively flat on the substrate or even sunk in it a bit. Please e-mail me privately if you have any further questions. If you are considering getting another tortoise, I can provide proper husbandry information to you. Please let me know.
